Protect your dog's hearing

Mutt Muffs can be purchased from: Welcome to Mutt Muffs!

From the web page:

This truly was a case of necessity being the mother... My dog Cooper, like most dogs, loves riding in anything that moves. So it was a natural doggy instinct to jump in the plane. I'd made a few short hops with my furry co-pilot, but was always very concerned about the decibel level and his sensitive ears.

And so the research began. The first prototypes, of course, showed which designs didn't work. And since dogs naturally feel no compunction to be diplomatic, I'm quite sure the translation was "Get away from me with that thing".

After the "organizational restructuring", Cooper was named Project Manager, and things progressed more quickly. So, for the $mall co$t of a few engineer$ and lots of dog treats, the right mixture of form and function was finally developed.

Cleared for takeoff.

I could not take Toga to band concerts because of the noise level. With Mutt Muffs I now can attend a concert. I also using hearing protection for myself.

My Review. I have the all-weather boots. They are extremely helpful for protecting Toga's feet whenever we have to walk through that salty, chemical-laced muck that occurs a few days after the snow falls, as well as on snowy, icy sidewalks and parking lots. I especially like them in hot summer weather as well.

Sometimes the parking lots get so hot during the extreme heat of summer that sealing coat of tar melts. One time I stepped out of the car with my first guide and I destroyed a pair of sneakers and later, my wife had a hard time getting the tar off my dog's foot. Now, my guide dogs wear their all-weather Muttluks in winter and summer too.

I do not know how many people have asked me why I have shoes on my dog. When I explain about how hot the parking lots can get, almost all of them have told me that they never would have thought of that. I must confess, I never really thought about it either -- before the incident with the melted tar hardened on my dog's foot.

Sometimes, it can be a little difficult for me to put the Muttluks on her. That is not a design flaw; it's because I also have some dexterity issues. It really was funny the first time that I put them on Indy, Micah and now Toga. None of them knew what to do and each one just stood still. It took a little coaxing to get them to walk. Indy was the funniest. He didn't walk, he marched. After walking around the house for about 15 minutes we harnessed up and we went for a walk which, as he grew accustomed to the fancy footwear, became fairly normal.

I do like the reflective straps They help with night working safety. I just switched to the yellow ones for Toga. If one should come off, the bright color will make it more noticeable for anyone who might be walking nearby.

The product is very well made, and I highly recommend them for guide dogs working all year round.

Here is my review of Altragrips Lite® Ice Cleats

From the web page Slipresistant.net

I feature innovative Jordan David slip resistant footwear because they're the recognized industry leader in slips and falls prevention. No matter what slippery surface, or combination of slippery surfaces, you'll find an effective, low cost, common sense solution for minimizing slips and falls at SlipResistant.net. Slip Resistant Slip Resistant Footwear Makes Regular Shoes Slip Resistant They have unique, patented features that make them perfect for delivery drivers. do not have to be removed when going indoors or when driving when ordered with the low profile 1mm studs because both the studs and treads make contact with the surface giving you traction on ice and snow as well as smooth dry and wet surfaces. You give up the full protection from water damage to your shoes but gain the ability to more easily have them with you when and where you need them. There's a ridge on the inside of the heel that catches in the ridge between the sole and shoe's upper to help keep them in place. They're easy to put on your shoes or boots. Simply place the toe of your shoe in the front strap. Then you grab the two rear, textured Dual Pull Tabs, a patented Jordan David exclusive feature, pulling the heel strap out and back. It's also easier because of Jordan David's Dual Density Design. The rubber between the front of the shoe and the heel where there is little or no wear is thinner making the device easier to stretch. They're uni-foot so you don't have to worry about left or right. •They stay securely on your footwear. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the Ankle Strap accessory. It provides one more way to prevent the shoe attachments from coming off your shoes or boots in a deep, wet snow.

Here is my review: When I spoke with Nolan at slipresistant.net about using Altragrips while working a guide dog, he recommended that I try the Altragrips-Lite because of the low profile stud. Not often but occasionally I step upon Toga’s foot. Since these studs are very small it is highly unlikely that I would cause major damage to her foot. I use to have a pair of another brand that I would never have considered wearing while working the dog because the spikes were about one half inch long. I have also tried wearing the ones that use the springs, that was a disaster. You must remove them before walking indoors the springs could roll and you would surely fall! And putting them on and off every time I need to enter a building or walk on a dry sidewalk would present all kinds of problems for me. I have some coordination problems which would make it hard for me to keep putting them on and off. Also I would not want to deal with the dirty slushy snow on them. How do you clean your hands before going inside a business? I find the worst time to walk is a few days after a snow storm. Most sidewalks are cleared but there is the occasional one that has not been cleaned or worse where melted snow has refrozen. I destroyed a few pairs of the spring-type studs while walking on dry pavement anticipating an icy portion. The Altragrips-Lite solved this problem since they can be worn on any surface. Last year I must have walked about ten miles on dry pavement and parking lots and they still look like new. This is a product I think everyone should use. The price is much cheaper than a fall resulting in bodily injury.

Protect your dog's Paws

Musher's Secretmay be purchased from: Mushers Secret-all season paw protection for your dog

From the web page:

Musher's Secret is a dense, barrier wax that forms a breathable bond with your dog's paws. Developed in Canada for use with sledding dogs, it provides tenacious protection even in the most extreme conditions.

Mushers Wax available in three sizes Safe and Natural Made from a blend of several food-grade waxes, then refined according to our our own special formulations, Musher's Secret is the safe, non-toxic way to protect your dog's paws. The semi-permeable shield is absorbed into the paws, allowing perspiration to escape through the toes.

Made from 100% natural waxes and easy to apply! Spread a light coating of Musher's Secret on the pads and rub in. Mushers will absorb in minutes (rub a little on your hands, when it is absorbed you will know it is absorbed into the pads as well). We use an old rug near the door for application purposes. In very harsh cold or snowy conditions be sure to rub up in between the pads to prevent snowballing. For year round use, 1-2 times a weeks is sufficient. During extreme weather additional applications may be necessary. Frequency may depend on length of your walk and weather conditions.

I like this product when I am not using the boots. When there is little snow and a lot of chemical on the street this keeps the chemicals from burning toga’s feet. It is also supposed to protect from hot sidewalks. I have to give it a try.
